PEC231: Modern Physics

This is a core unit in Physics at the second year level. Its aim is to study the basis of modern physics. Topics: special relativity wave mechanics, introductory quantum theory including one and three dimensional systems, matter as particles and waves, basic quantum theory for one and three dimensional systems, the hydrogen atom, atomic structure and chemical bonding. Students will be required to complete experimental projects during the unit.

Enrolment Options

Murdoch: S1-internal, S1-external

Contact Time

Lectures: 2 hours per week; workshops: 2 hours per week.
External: no attendance requirement.

Prerequisites

M161/MAS161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra and PEC152 Principles of Physics.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

Exclusions

Students who have successfully completed M211 Quantum Theory may not enrol in this unit for credit.
