PEC144: Chemical Principles
This unit provides a foundation in the principles of general chemistry relative to the study and practice of the physical, biological, biomedical, environmental and marine sciences.
Content: bonding, solubility and solution chemistry (including acid-base and redox reactions), thermodynamics and reaction kinetics, topics in organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry. The laboratory section contains practical exercises that support the material presented in lectures and develops competent and safe working practices.

| Contact Time | Lectures/tutorials/workshops: a total of 4 hours per week; laboratories: 3 hours per week for a maximum of 8 weeks.

| Prerequisites | A thorough knowledge of Year 12 secondary-level chemistry is assumed.
Students who did not achieve a final scaled score of 60% or more in TEE Chemistry within the three years immediately preceding enrolment are required to pass PEC140 Introduction to Chemistry prior to enrolling.
Students who are unsure of their status should consult the Chemistry Academic Chair.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

| Exclusions | Students who have successfully completed PEC114 Chemistry for Biological Sciences, PEC115 Chemistry for Environmental Sciences, PEC116 Chemistry for Physical Sciences may not enrol in this unit for credit.
