PEC140: Introduction to Chemistry
Topics: atomic and molecular structure of matter, chemical symbols and equations, valency, states of matter, gas laws, simple reaction types, acids and bases, the mole concept, chemical stoichiometry, molarity, pH, titrations, chemical equilibrium, kinetics, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, thermochemistry, properties of hydrocarbons, halogenoalkanes and alcohols, organic nomenclature.

| Prerequisites | This unit is for students with a weak background in chemistry.
Students with a final scaled score of more than 60% in TEE Chemistry within the past three years may be excluded from the unit.
A knowledge of basic mathematics will be assumed.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

| Exclusions | Students who are currently enrolled in or who have successfully completed PEC114 Chemistry for Biological Sciences, PEC115 Chemistry for Environmental Science, PEC116 Chemistry for Physical Sciences, PEC144 Chemical Principles may not enrol in this unit for credit.

| Notes | Completion of this unit will enable students to enrol in PEC144 Principles of Chemistry.
Local conditions govern the laboratory component in the APMISIN and CEJTOKYO offerings.
Students without year 10 Science should consider completing PEC100 Preparatory Science prior to PEC140. |
