MAS180: Introduction to Statistics

This unit provides an introduction to statistical techniques used to collect, summarise, interpret and present numerical information, with particular emphasis on applications from commerce, economics and the social sciences. The unit aims to show students how statistics contributes to their chosen area of study. Topics: display, estimation and testing, including one- and two-sample tests, frequency tables, and regression. Students are introduced to the use of a spreadsheet package for the analysis of data.

Contact Time	Lectures/tutorials/computer laboratories: 4 hours per week.
Prerequisites	Nil. Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
Exclusions	Students who have successfully completed or are enrolled in either M183/MAS183 Statistical Data Analysis and Databases or M184/MAS184 Biostatistics and Information Retrieval may not enrol in this unit.
