LAW257: Law in China: Continuity and Change

This unit introduces the Chinese legal system since 1980. Topics include constitutional and civil law, as well as international trade legislation. The unit also addresses the reasons for the current radical transformation of China's legal system, paying attention to traditional legal practices, their changes under Mao, to reforms in the transition to market socialism and globalisation. Government policy, legislative processes, and specific new laws will be investigated, with case studies illustrating the law reform program.
