JPN208: Japan in the World: Nation, Culture, Image (Not available in 2010)

Throughout the twentieth century Japan has figured prominently in academic, journalistic and popular discourses in the world in highly evocative and contradictory ways. This unit aims to shed light on how Japan comes to be 'known' in the world, and how it seeks to represent itself, to itself and others. The unit will focus on: imagining, discovering and inventing Japan; cultural practices and representations in terms of conformity/diversity, gender, 'the popular'; nexus between texts and construction of culturally-specific images.
