HIS285: Approaches to History

Students are introduced to a more effective use of sociological, anthropological and philosophical concepts used by historians in studying the past. In discussing various approaches and methodologies, examples will be drawn from historical studies of Anglo-American, European and non-western societies. The unit, emphasising the variety of history, will deal with the following areas: anthropology and history; sociology and history; quantification and history; social history; psychology and history; history and social practice.
