HIS279: Convicts and Settlers: Colonial Australia (Not available in 2010)

This unit is a study of white colonial society in Australia from 1788 to the depression of the 1890s. It focuses on events and issues that have shaped the character of Australian society, examining our origins as a convict settlement, the development of pastoralism and free immigration, the impact of the gold rushes, the growth of an urban culture and the origins of nationalism. Students will have an opportunity to explore documentary sources and different theoretical approaches.
