HIS227: Disease in History (Not available in 2010)

Disease in world history, examining: leprosy; acute epidemic diseases, including bubonic plague and cholera; sexually transmitted disease; the impact of disease at different stages of the life cycle; diseases of industrialism and occupation; diseases of imperialism and colonialism; major twentieth century diseases. Disease has been understood and treated differently in different times and places because it is constituted socially and culturally as well as biologically. Explore these interrelations, the ways in which human history has been shaped by disease.
