HIS223: American Indian History

This unit seeks to develop an understanding of Amerindian peoples, their civilisations, history, philosophies, and contemporary social problems. Other issues include origins and traditional heritage stressing evolution; ecology and innovation; a chronology of Amerindian-European contact; biological and cultural impact of European expansion; family life and acculturation. The last part of the unit deals with modern problems of urbanisation and institutionalisation including drinking; ideology and identity; indigenous movements; land rights; and the Native American and the greater society.
