HIS220: Britannia to the Beatles: Power, Sex and Identity in Modern Britain

This unit examines Britain from 1901 until 2000. It follows the British people during the great changes that occurred in the twentieth century such as the dislocation brought about by international wars and the decline of the Empire. The theme of identity is used to examine the ways in which gender, ethnicity and class have worked to divide and/or unite the British nation. Topics include: Scottish and Welsh nationalism, British cinema, 'Swinging London', Thatcherism and immigration.
