HIS203: After Power: The Fall of Regimes and Rulers (Not available in 2010)

Examines (i) how political regimes in the modern period have ended (orderly transition, dramatic collapse of individual leader, defeat in war, societal revolution) and (ii) the political and personal consequences for former leaders (including Washington, Napoleon, Nicholas II, Churchill, Nixon, Amin, Mandela, Gorbachev, Thatcher, Pinochet, Milosevic, Hussein). Key themes include: the comparison of legitimate and 'criminal' regimes/leaders; the growth of the concept of accountability; the mechanics of regime change; and legacies of power in the post-colonial world.
