EXM224: Principles of Unit Operations

The general principles of unit operations which form the basis for mineral processing and extractive metallurgical plants. Focus: mass and energy balances, elementary fluid mechanics and aspects of mass, energy and momentum transfer relevant to the above industries. Topics: mass and energy balance, fluid flow phenomena, basic equations of flow, transportation and metering of fluids, agitation and mixing of liquids and pulps, principles of diffusion and mass transfer in liquids, pulps and between phases, heat transfer processes.

Prerequisites

M182/MAS182 Applied Mathematics or M161/MAS161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra and M152/PEC152 Principles of Physics or high school physics, or enrolment in G1034 Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

Exclusions

Students who have successfully completed G277/ENG277 Process Engineering may not complete this unit for credit.
