EXM131: Introduction to Extractive Metallurgy

This unit provides an overview of the processes used to extract metals from ores. Mineral processing: crushing, grinding, sizing, concentration, solid-liquid separation, gas cleaning, flow sheets. Pyrometallurgy: fuels, roasting and calcining, smelting of oxides and sulphides, electrometallurgy, refining, material balances, flow sheets. Hydrometallurgy: chemical principles, processing steps and practical considerations, local hydrometallurgical processes, environmental aspects, sustainable resource processing.
