EXM130: Introduction to Earth Sciences

This introductory unit in geology begins by taking a global view of Earth, looking at its origin and the way the whole Earth 'works'. The focus shifts then to processes which operate on or within the crust of the Earth, including earthquakes, volcanism and magmatic processes, weathering and soils, sedimentary processes, deformation and erosion. Mineral and rock identification are included in laboratory sessions. All this is set in the context of plate tectonics -- the unifying theme of modern geology.

Prerequisites	No prior knowledge of geology is required. Knowledge of physical sciences at senior high school level is assumed. Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
