EGL237: Narrative: Fiction and Film

This unit deals with a range of significant novels and provides a parallel analysis of a select number of their filmic transformations. Drawing from major writers in English of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the unit ends up focusing on writing and filmic representations that radically question realism. Questions about narrative structure, generic patterns, literary and filmic realism, author/auteur theory, among others, will be taken up in some detail. Students acquire skills in reading and interpreting novel and film.
