EDU643: Qualitative Approaches to Research

The unit addresses qualitative research designs and methods in educational and social science.  Qualitative research designs such as phenomenological, historical and ethnograhic approaches, case studies and action research are critiqued.  Emphasis is given to how qualitative approaches can build theory and deepen understanding.  Methods for generating and analysing data will be addressed, including for example, participant observation, discourse and content analysis, interviews and focus groups.  Additionally, interpretative and theoretical frameworks, markers of quality and ethics in qualitative research are considered.

Prerequisites

EDU403/603 Introduction to Research for Educators, F434/EDU434/F634 Qualitative Research Methods I, R315/PSY315 Psychology: Qualitative Methods, or permission of the Unit Coordinator.
For the 600-level version of the unit students must be enrolled in a postgraduate qualification and for the 700-level unit, enrolment in the Doctor of Education).
Students enrolled in other courses should contact the Unit Coordinator.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
