EDU321: Children, Families and Schools

Interactions between education, families and communities are studied in this unit. The aim is to develop both the knowledge and the skills that educators need for working with families in ways that both respect diversity and support students' varied learning needs. Topics include: the relationship between school practices and sociocultural practices; notions of educational risk; parent education; health and disability issues; conceptions of parenthood and the family; relationships between families and professionals; codes of professional practice, ethics and the law.

Contact Time	Workshops: 3 hours per week.
Prerequisites	Enrolment in a teacher education course. Students should be enrolled in or have successfully completed a school experience unit. This prerequisite is waived for students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Education Studies (Early Childhood Education or Inclusive Education specialisations). Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
