BMS203: Comparative and Human Microbiology

Basic knowledge and practical skills in microbiology relating to comparative human/animal infections, including sections on bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, rickettsia, chlamydia and fungi. Bacteriology: introduction to general features of pathogenic bacteria including structure, metabolism, genetics, culture and identification, with emphasis on mechanisms by which they cause disease and the principles of diagnosis and control. Virology: introduction to classification and taxonomy of viruses, a description of structure, mode of replication and inhibition, and discussion of selected human and zoonotic virus infections.

Notes

For the purpose of progression in Biomedical Science, this unit is considered essential and not equivalent to BIO263 Microbiology 1. It incorporates a significant virology component that is not contained in BIO263 and considered an important requisite for BMS360 Mechanisms of Disease and BMS368 Advances in Medical Science and for Biomedical Science graduates.
