BIO505: Fish and Fisheries Biology (Not available in 2010)

Students will gain a sound understanding of fundamental aspects of fish biology (e.g. age, growth, reproduction) and their importance for managing fisheries and the ecosystems that support fisheries. Case histories of selected fisheries for crustaceans, molluscs and finfish will be discussed. Students will also gain an understanding of current trends in fisheries and their management, particularly the move towards ecosystem based fisheries management. Other topics include the use of Excel in fish research, modelling for management and rebuilding fisheries.

Enrolment in a honours or postgraduate level course.

Notes

Students enrolled in BIO505 are required to read the background literature more extensively, demonstrate a greater depth of understanding and display a greater ability to integrate the subject matter than students enrolled in BIO205. They are also required to develop a PowerPoint presentation of their major essay.
