BIO301: Industrial Bioprocessing and Bioremediation

Microbes play a key role in industrial and environmental bioprocesses such as pharmaceutical and food production, waste treatment, renewable energy generation and environmental bioremediation. The principles of these bioprocesses are studied using a problem-based approach. The unit investigates how microbial reactions can be predicted and controlled and how oxygen, pH and other conditions affect different bioprocesses. Example topics are: pollutant biodegradation, algae culture, vitamin, antibiotic and beer/wine production, bioleaching, bio-fuels, bio-electricity, bioreactor design and control.
