AST331: Rise of Asia and Modern History (Not available in 2010)

Explore the organising concepts of historical inquiry and human society -- 'culture', 'society', 'modes of production' -- by considering the transformation of the Euro/American core and the rise of Asia since 1400, as a global process of political-economic and cultural interdependencies between capitalism and non-Western societies. The rise of Asia in modern history is best understood within the wider context of global capitalism. The transformation of Europe and rise of Asia cannot be separated: each is the other's history.
