AST330: Contemporary Asia: Nations, Narratives, Cultures

Utilises narrative to explore knowledge, culture, identity and nation in contemporary East and South-East Asia. A range of texts 'produced' in China, Japan and South-East Asia will be read in conjunction with texts of a theoretical/critical nature within the context of six topics. Following an introductory theoretical topic the unit examines indigenous narrative forms and modernity; civil society and the 'novel'; national crisis and individual lives; sex, gender and class; narrative and the postcolonial/postmodern imagination.
