AST276: The People's History of South-East Asia

Explores important themes in South-East Asian modern history, including contemporary social patterns and historical processes, in particular Asian societies as perceived by the people themselves; the structure of social dominance; the autonomy of popular culture; the impact of global trade; migration and the diaspora communities; colonialism and self; ideology and revolution; commodities, lifestyles and identities. The unit aims to bring the boundaries of South-East Asian history as close as possible to those of people's lives and experiences.
