ANS252: Animal Molecular Biology

This unit focuses on the role of genetic material in controlling the activities of the bacterial and animal cells with particular emphasis on production animals. Topics include: DNA replication and mutation; control of protein synthesis; mechanisms of genetic disease; mechanisms of pathogenesis of infectious bacteria and viruses; control of development; genetic engineering; molecular markers of genetic traits in animals. In the laboratory sessions students gain practical experience with the techniques of genetic engineering.

Prerequisites	Enrolment in Bachelor of Animal Science; BIO152 Cell Biology and PEC140 Introduction to Chemistry.
Exclusions	Students who have completed BIO212 Genetic Engineering cannot undertake this unit for credit.
