AIS505: Australian Indigenous Politics: Resistance or Collusion

Examines the internal politics of Aboriginal communities and organisations, and the often stormy relationships between them and the federal and state governing apparatus of Australia. Topics: conflicts between Aboriginal groups in their seeking to influence government instrumentalities; relationships with political parties and their policies; role of the federal and state governments; bureaucratic structures and service delivery; elections and representation; and past and present responses to initiatives, including Indigenous calls for regional governance, sovereignty, and reform of the Native Title Regime.

Lectures: 1 hour per week; tutorials/seminars: 1.5 hours per week.

Prerequisites

Enrolment in an Honours, Graduate or Postgraduate course.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.

Exclusions

Students who have successfully completed AIS405 Australian Indigenous Politics may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Notes

Graduate, Postgraduate and Honours students should enrol in the higher-level code for this unit except where the course structure states otherwise.
