Retain interactivity
Lectopia is simply a tool to make your lectures available beyond the classroom. It should not determine
how you teach. Retain interactivity and capture student questions and comments by repeating them or
passing around the microphone. While the aim is to afford a good experience for students who do not
attend, it is expected that the face-to-face experience will be richer.
Provide audio signposts
So that students know when the lecture begins and is over, it is recommended that you make this clear
using audio signposts or cues. You will use your own words, but these suggestions indicate the kinds
of things that will be helpful.
Introduction, unit code, unit title, date, lecture title
- Good morning. My name is ………………….
- 'Welcome to ICT108, Introduction to Multimedia and the Internet: It's February 20 and week 1.
- This lecture is being recorded and will be available online within 48 hours via the unit web page.
Some things I say will be to make the recorded lecture easier to use.'
Starting, pausing, stopping
- 'This is the start of lecture 1 "What is Multimedia?" This lecture will last 45 minutes'
- 'We are now splitting up into groups for a 10 minute activity'
- 'We will now take a 15 minute break'
- 'Resuming lecture 1 for Introduction to Multimedia and the Internet: What is Multimedia?'
- 'This is the end of lecture 1 for Introduction to Multimedia and the Internet: What is Multimedia?'
Make up for limitations of audio only
- Indicate when you change to a new visual. You may want to number or describe the visual.
- Describe any relevant physical objects or activity that needs to be visualised by the listeners.
- Repeat questions and comments from the floor.
What to avoid
- Don't stand with the mic over the overhead projector. The fan noise will interfere.
- Don't rustle papers more than necessary.
- Don't tap or click a pen as you are talking.
- If you walk, be aware of microphone bounce – particularly against buttons.
Practice
It is a good idea to practise how you will present for audio recording. This can be done on your
own, in private or with willing friends.
