If you’ve previously studied or have professional work experience in a relevant field, you may be eligible to receive credit towards your Murdoch degree. Known as advanced standing, this recognition of prior learning could reduce your overall study load and shorten the length of time before you’re able to graduate.

Eligibility

Prior formal learning

You may be eligible for advanced standing if you’ve previously undertaken formal learning that led to the full or partial completion of an officially accredited qualification.

Murdoch University has agreements for advanced standing with a variety of national and international institutions, including universities and registered training organisations (RTOs). You can use our advanced standing calculator to check whether you may be eligible to receive credits or exemptions from previous study.

To apply for advanced standing on the basis of prior formal learning, you’ll need to provide the following supporting documentation and send it through to advancedstanding@murdoch.edu.au:

Prior informal learning

You may also be entitled to advanced standing on the basis of informal or non-formal learning gained through professional and/or work experience.

Students seeking exemptions through professional and/or work experience may only request advanced standing towards core units or specified electives from within their course structure – requests for advanced standing from general electives cannot be accepted.

To be considered for advanced standing, you must provide evidence that sufficiently demonstrates the acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills at the required level. You will need to provide the following documentation with your application:

  • cover letter
  • up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV), resume or summary of previous work history and training
  • detailed statement of criteria for each individual unit, addressing how you achieved all the required learning outcomes and objectives through your professional and/or work experience.

Applicants are encouraged to consult the relevant professional bodies to confirm that any advanced standing granted on the basis of professional and/or work experience will be accepted upon registration. Certain professional bodies, such as the Certified Practising Accountants, may not accept or recognise this form of advanced standing.

International students

If you’re an international student, you must formally accept any advanced standing that has been offered to you. If the advanced standing affects your course duration, Murdoch will issue you with a Confirmation of Enrolment reflecting the new course duration.
