When you graduate from this course, you will be able to design, engineer, operate, and troubleshoot both broad spectrum and specialised water treatment processes. This course will enable you to meet the needs of the water industry with specialty skills in design, operation, monitoring and planning of water treatment and desalination infrastructure and processes.
The coursework will provide students with a strong grounding in the fundamentals of water engineering, but an application and practice focus is the hallmark of the program. The course is designed to give graduates specific knowledge of the tools, algorithms, hardware and software, and the state of the art practice of water purification for beneficial use.
This course is designed to satisfy requirements of Engineers Australia for Continuing Professional Education of Engineers in the disciplines of environmental engineering, water engineering, and chemical engineering in the areas of water process control, technology, and management.
The Master’s in Water Treatment and Desalination will prepare you for employment in the companies or governmental agencies in which water is the primary business. Many industries also employ water treatment engineers to advise on projects; such as mining, horticulture, energy generation, oil and gas recovery, livestock and agriculture production and processing, semi-conductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and hospitals and health care facilities.

Entry requirements for
Some attendance at on- and off-campus site visits and technology operation sessions will be a requirement. Water treatment engineering is a highly quantitative profession requiring sound grounding in physics, chemistry, fluid mechanics, and mathematics. The coursework assumes a prior understanding of the fundamentals of these disciplines to a level allowing entry into the specifics of water engineering without further general instruction in these disciplines. Consequently, students entering the course must have passed the following units at Murdoch or their equivalent elsewhere: MAS221 Mathematical Modelling ENG201 Fluid Mechanics CHE144, Foundations of Chemistry PEN152, Principles of Physics For students with potentially equivalent alternative training, contact the Academic Chair for assessment of equivalency.
