Step 6 – Orientation Week

Orientation Week (O Week)

Orientation Week is an essential step in your transition to being a University student. The Orientation program has been designed to meet your specific needs as a new student to Murdoch and to introduce you to key Murdoch University staff and the campus and facilities you will require. We’ve planned a number of activities that will give you lots of opportunity to experience the helpful and friendly atmosphere at Murdoch.

You will need to attend at least 2 days of O Week for Murdoch Campus students or 1 day for Rockingham and Peel students. These days are defined by the School that your course is attached to. Make sure that you review the allocated program and book it in your diary to ensure that you can attend all of your required sessions.

It’s also a really good idea to get at least one of your loved ones to spend an hour or so with us at ‘Parents, Partners and Friends’ on the Sunday before O week. This session covers a general overview of a University student’s life including: expectations, academic workloads, what to do if things don’t go to plan, and the support that parents, partners and friends can provide during these times. We’ll also top that off with a cuppa and some bikkies in our food court so you can have an informal chat with current students and staff.

On the first day of your orientation you'll:

  • Discover – All about Murdoch and what you should expect here as well as which Foundation Unit is best for you.
  • Investigate – Your course advice session. Find out what your options are and how your Program Chair can help you. This session will provide you with valuable information relating to your course, units and enrolment options and therefore it is essential that you attend.
  • Support – Who can help you? Find out before you need it.
  • and
  • Succeed – How to be a successful student.

On the following days you'll be able to:

  • Explore – Campus and Library tours. How not to get lost.
  • and
  • Connect – Computer use on campus.

As well as the six essential components above, we’ve organised a number of other sessions and activities which could prove really useful. Not all of the following sessions will be relevant to everyone but they’re well worth attending if there’s any possibility that they may help you along the way. The optional but highly recommended sessions on offer include:

  • Learning to Learn – Run by our award winning Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) team, at this session you will discover how you learn and understand some of the biological processes that occur in your brain as you learn. You will gain insight into how to learn effectively at university so this is a valuable session for you to attend.
  • Goal-setting and motivation session - In this session our TLC team will explain how succeeding at university requires more than intellectual aptitude. In any journey of discovery there are hurdles. Goals, expectations, and persistence all play a significant role in determining your success as a student.
  • Lab Safety for Undergrads – Otherwise known as 'How Not to Blow Yourself Up – 101'. This is a must for all students who'll be working in a laboratory setting. Get all the information you need to go home in the same state as you arrived – safe and in one piece.
  • Murdoch Village Orientation – If you live here, it is a good idea to figure out where to go to wash your clothes and meet your new neighbours!
  • Uniform Fittings – Nursing students! Kit yourself out so that you can look and feel professional from day one with a uniform to fit your shape and size.

All that and we’ll even throw in a free lunch on day one. Could you ask for anything more?!!!

Things you can also do before O-Week:

  • Have your photo taken for your Student ID/Library Card at the IT Service Desk in the Library at the Murdoch campus, the Rockingham Library, or the Peel Learning Common.
  • Parking Permit - after you have enrolled into your units you can purchase your parking permit, either online or in person at the Student Service Centre in the Chancellery building at Murdoch campus.

Students at the Rockingham and Peel campuses will be required to apply for a 2008 permit, however, there will be no charge for 2008. You can apply via the Rockingham and Peel administration offices. Please take a printed copy of your enrolment details from MyInfo (showing that you are a Rockingham/Peel student), fill out a Rockingham/Peel application form and hand this in at either the Rockingham or Peel Administration Offices. Forms will be available from each office. Applications for a Rockingham/Peel permit will not be accepted at the Murdoch campus.
