• Centrelink - Avoid a student debt

  If you receive a Centrelink payment, you need to tell Centrelink about any income and changes in your or your partner's circumstances so that you are paid the correct amount. If you are overpaid benefits, you will probably have to pay money back. An additional recovery fee may also be imposed if incorrect information has deliberately been given to Centrelink about employment income.

  As a reminder, you need to tell Centrelink within 14 days if you think a change in your life might affect your payment. Changes that must be notified include:

  • changes to your study arrangements
  • changes to earnings
  • changes to assets
  • changes to the amount paid in rent or change your address
  • becoming or ceasing to be part of a couple
