Senate

The University’s governing body, the Senate, has its functions, powers and duties specified in section 17 of the Murdoch University Act 1973.

In August 2004, Senate adopted the Murdoch University Senate Statement of Governance Principles, which applies to Senate, its standing committees and working parties. The Principles include:

  • The Senate Charter, detailing the role and functions of Senate and its standing committees and working parties.
  • A Code of Conduct for Senators.
  • Standing Orders that apply to meetings of Senate and its committees and working parties.

Each year Senate conducts an annual performance evaluation that includes:

  • Review of the Senate and its performance, including a review of its duties and responsibilities in the context of what has happened during the year.
  • Consideration of the results of an annual survey of Senators seeking feedback on aspects of the operation of the Senate.
  • Comparison of the performance of the Senate and its committees against the requirements of the Murdoch University Senate Statement of Governance Principles.  The SGP are currently being reviewed by Senate's Governance & Nominations Committee and may be subject to change.
  • Setting the goals and objectives of the Senate for the following year, including identification of needed skills and expertise for the future.
  • Review of the University’s conformance with the National Governance Protocols.
  • Consideration of developments in best practice governance and implementation of any improvements to the University’s governance practices considered necessary or desirable.

Academic Council

The Academic Council is established pursuant to Statute No. 5 – Academic Council, pursuant to Clause 21(1) of the Murdoch University Act 1973.

The Standing Orders for Academic Council and Subordinate Bodies apply to meetings of Academic Council, its standing committees, Faculty Committees and School Boards. Working parties established by any of these committees are governed by the Guidelines for Working Parties Established by Academic Council and its Sub-Committees.

Standing committees provide reports on their operations to Academic Council in accordance with their approved terms of reference.

The role, functions, membership, committee system of Academic Council, links between Academic Council and Senate, and links with the senior executive have been subject to two joint Academic Council/Senate reviews in 2002 and 2008.
