Be inspired by world-changing research
It takes a certain place to nurture and encourage the kind of thinking that ruthlessly pursues the eureka moment. Discover how Murdoch researchers are using this type of free-thinking to deliver life-changing outcomes that can and do change the world.
Steve and Sue’s Think has unlocked life-changing treatments
"Collectively, our team’s Think has powered the discovery of a breakthrough treatment that drastically improves the lives of those suffering with one of the most severe types of muscular dystrophy."
It is not often that researchers take an idea from concept to clinic during their career, but Murdoch professors Steve Wilton and Sue Fletcher have done exactly that. Aided by a dedicated team and driven by an unrelenting focus that has spanned more than two decades, Steve and Sue found a treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a disease that was long believed to be untreatable.
Their game-changing discovery is amongst the best medical research in the world and they aren’t stopping here. While we cheer them on from the sidelines, Steve, Sue and their team are already thinking several steps ahead to explore how their research can treat a variety of genetic diseases.
Murdoch is proudly research-led and is committed to meeting global challenges through innovation and inspired thinking.
Kirsty’s Think helps to provide food security for the world
“My Think led me to discover how to extend the shelf life of fresh produce so more people have access to healthy food. Our technology is based on the most abundant form of matter in the universe – plasma. Not only is it chemical-free, but it kills mould that grows on fruit and vegetables, meaning that less food needs to be thrown away. By reducing wastage, we could make more food available for more people, worldwide.”
Murdoch is a leader in world-class, translational research that provides solutions to global challenges. Dr Kirsty Bayliss is Academic Chair for Master of Biosecurityand Master of Food Security in our School of Veterinary and Life Sciences.
Adrian’s Think pioneers new mental health treatments
“My Think is driven to pioneer new ways of treating depression and anxiety in adolescents. We know saffron is a promising natural option for the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression in adults, as it’s thought to reduce inflammation, remove free radicals from the body and in turn, lead to an increase in serotonin. We have previously conducted significant work in this field but we’re not satisfied with stopping here. At Murdoch, we’re conducting the first study of its kind in adolescents to discover a natural way to help teens suffering from depressive and anxiety symptoms.”
Murdoch has an established reputation for excellence in research. Dr Adrian Lopresti is a researcher in our School of Psychology and Exercise Science.
