When dialed up to Murdoch University as your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you have free access to a number of sites. These include all Murdoch University webpages and any site on the WAIX network (which includes UWA, Curtin, ECU, iiNet, Westnet among others). Check out http://waix.bur.st/ for sites that are (usually) free.
For other sites, you will need to be logged into your Internet Quota, and have funds currently on it. You will by default receive a certain amount of money from the university during semester for the purposes of online research. This amount is given to you by your division. Basically, they determine how much Internet Quota they believe your units require for research purposes. They then give you that money, but spread out over the entire semester.
You can see the amount of money you receive from your division in any given week by using the "Check Quota" facility under the above Internet Quota link, and clicking on "Transaction History". Amounts can vary from as little as 6c/week to as much as 70c/week, depending on the number of units you are doing, and how much Internet Quota your division has given to those units.
As for how long your money will last, check out the "How much do I get charged for using the internet?" FAQ. If you run out of quota in any given week and require internet access, you will need to top up your Internet Quota with your own money. More notes on the quota system process can be found here.
