How do I start using my internet quota?
Murdoch University provides a service for internet use for on campus users connecting from lab machines and personal laptops via wireless. As there are costs involved in viewing external web-pages such as Google, Yahoo etc, you will need to use your Internet quota account. This is done by establishing a session to the Murdoch 'Gateway' using a Secure Shell (SSH) connection.
Once you have logged into the ‘Gateway’, you will need to keep the ‘Gateway’ window open while you are browsing external sites. You will only be charged for viewing external websites while the window is open, and only be able to access these sites when the window is open.
When you have finished browsing external web-pages, you can disconnect from the ‘Gateway’ window by opening the window, and pressing ‘Enter’ to disconnect.
For Windows machines, Murdoch uses an application called ‘PuTTY’ to connect using SSH. This application can be installed using the following sources:
· From home, by using your personal internet to browse to http://www.putty.org/ and selecting ‘Download’.
· From the iT Service Counter, by bringing your laptop in and asking for installation media.
Apple Macintosh machines can use the built in ‘Terminal’ application to establish an SSH connection.

Instructions for connecting to the Gateway via SSH using PuTTy can be found here.

Additional Requirements
If you are using a wireless connection on campus, you will also need to use a virtual private networkin (VPN) connection in addition to using PuTTY to connect to our network. For further information on using VPN, please go to the below URL, or contact the iT Service Desk on extension 2000.
