- (03 Nov 09, 17:06) Daylight Saving Change
- Impact to Murdoch computers, mobile devices and their Users.
Please read carefully.
The removal of Daylight Saving in Western Australia has caused a number of issues with computers throughout the state with varying impact. These problems surfaced on the 26th October. Although software patches have been available to limit the impact of these issues, none have been 100% successful.
IT Services is working on a number of solutions with an objective to cause the least impact to Users and computers. Our goal was to correct the time on each computer and automatically correct as many calendar appointments in Exchange. It is now clear there is no remedy or tool available to completely deliver these goals without significant User intervention.
What will happen next:
A software patch will be automatically applied to all Murdoch owned and managed Windows computers to correct the problems. In preparation for applying this software patch, please ensure you have sufficient records of your calendar appointments in order to manually recreate the appointments, if required. Printing of calendars is the best option. No appointments will be lost as a result of this process but they may not be scheduled at the correct time after the patch is applied.
The patch will cause at least two changes to occur – the time will change and “Daylight Saving” in Date & Time properties will be ticked “Off”. In some cases, you may be asked to restart your computer - please do so if instructed.
When the time on your computer is displaying correctly, please check your calendar appointments. Some will have to be corrected manually – please do so. Please note that you will not be able to change/correct calendar appointments unless you are the initiator.
Conclusion:
The software patch is being prepared and will be deployed after close of business tomorrow, Wednesday November 4, 2009.
The patch is not a complete fix and will require some intervention to correct your calendar.
Although IT Services is unable to deploy and apply patches to Apple computers and mobile phones, the changes will have an impact to Users on these platforms i.e. Apple Users may have an appointment set by a Windows User, any changes the Windows User makes to this appointment will change the appointment time in Entourage.
Mobile phones will have a similar experience to Apple Users, although synchronization with Exchange should take care of these issues if the device is in the correct time zone and does not have Daylight Saving enabled. In general, mobile Users will experience the impact of the changes applied for longer than Users of desktop machines as they are not constantly connected to the Murdoch network.
Windows based laptop Users who are not connected to the Murdoch network will not receive the patch until such time they reconnect to the network. These Users will see changes to appointment times applied by people they have received meeting invitations from.
More information:
Information updates are regularly published on this website http://www.murdoch.edu.au/itservicedesk. The IT Service Desk will answer any questions regarding these issues and any others that Users may be experiencing.
