To: Sunday July 12, 2009 9.00PM
Some university telephone and computer network services will not be available for up to one hour within this period.

- (10 Jun 09, 11:51) Commonwealth Bank Email Scam
- ITS have received a number of reports from users concerned about emails they have received purporting to be from the Commonwealth Bank. These emails are fraudulent and the Bank and the Australian Federal Police are currently investigating the source of these messages. Murdoch University has not been specifically targeted - the scammers have attempted to send spam to any address that appears to belong to an Australian resident.
Please immediately delete any of these scam messages. See http://www.commbank.com.au/news/netbank-news-30.aspx for information from the Commonwealth Bank about this issue, as well as examples of specific hoax emails.
- (28 May 09, 8:06) Phishing Email Warning
- Murdoch University is again the target of a phishing attack, i.e. e-mail purporting to be on behalf of the HELPDESK ADMINISTRATOR.
The current attempt advises you how much space you have in your email box and requests you to supply your username and password to have your email space reset.
The Office of IT Services will never send e-mails of this nature to any users, no IT Staff, or any other staff for that matter, will need to ask users for their password.
Your Murdoch Password is personal and confidential and must never be disclosed to anybody.
The best course of action when you receive e-mails of this nature, is to attach it to an email and send it through to spam.report@murdoch.edu.au where our IT Security team can review it.
To verify any e-mail received from the Office of IT Services, please contact the iT Service Desk, either via e-mail to itservicedesk@murdoch.edu.au or by calling extension 2000 from any Murdoch campus phone, or 08 9360 2000 from mobiles and from outside Murdoch campuses.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the current phishing attempt, we are working to resolve this situation.

25/06/2009 // Introducing the password protected screensaver
The Office of IT Services has recently assessed several aspects of security of computer use across campus, and is currently looking at making several changes to the way things work. As part of this initiative to improve the security of Murdoch Applications, we are introducing automatic password locking when a workstation is idle for 15 minutes.
What does this mean for you?
Now, when you walk away from your computer, the screen saver will activate after its designated time (15 minutes). When you return to your computer and deactivate the screen saver, you will need to enter your Murdoch password to continue.
Why are we doing this?
More and more applications are moving towards Single Sign On (SSO) integration (for example OrgPlus, RightNow Console, IRMA). This now starts to raise some security concerns, as while your workstation is unattended, your machine could be maliciously exploited.
Through an unattended (and unlocked) PC, an attacker could gain direct access to a much wider range of potentially very sensitive information while the SSO session is established. While most staff will secure their work area, for shared offices and open areas, additional security should help reduce the risk that unattended machines represent.
