Introduction

As stated in the AFPCS Policy, the University will always ensure that the pay and conditions of employees at least meets the AFPCS.

AFPCS Guidelines

Compassionate Leave

As a minimum the University’s employees (other than casual employees) have access to two (2) days paid leave on each occasion:

  • when a household member or member of the employee’s immediate family suffers a personal illness or injury that poses a serious threat to that person’s life, or
  • when a household member or member of the employee’s immediate family dies.

Compassionate Leave can be taken as single days, or in a block of 2 days. The University may require evidence of the illness, injury or death to which the application for compassionate leave applies.

General staff on the Collective Workplace Agreement have access to Short Leave, which should, where possible, be used to cover compassionate absences. Where short leave has been exhausted an employee will be granted additional leave in accordance with these guidelines.

Academic staff on the Collective Workplace Agreement will be granted compassionate leave in accordance with these guidelines.

Staff on common law contracts will be granted compassionate leave in accordance with these guidelines, unless their contract has a more generous provision.

Staff on Australian Workplace Agreements have a compassionate leave entitlement which is in excess of the standard and will not need to rely on these guidelines.
