Murdoch Username

For the purposes of authenticating users of Murdoch University's computing and network facilities, logging in to computers and accessing restricted information resources, application systems and services, in most cases requires a user to enter a Murdoch Username at a login screen. The prompt used on a login screen may vary. For example: 'Murdoch Username' 'Username' or 'User ID'.

All staff, students and other individuals associated with Murdoch University have an Identification Number (Staff Number, Student Number, or Person Number). This is used as the Murdoch Username.

People who are both a staff member AND a student of the University will have two Murdoch Usernames. Each person will need to remember to use the correct username for the systems and services that they use.

Murdoch Username (Staff)

The Murdoch Username for staff of Murdoch University is their Staff Number as used in the Human Resources System.

The format for Staff Numbers in the Human Resources System is:

• SnnnnnnA (1999 and prior) - starts with upper case S, then 6 numeric characters, then ends with uppercase alpha character A-Z
• nnnnnnnn (2000 -  ) - 8 numeric characters starting from 20001000

The Murdoch Username for students at Murdoch University is their Student Number. The Student Number has eight numeric characters within the following ranges:

• 12,000,001 --> 19,999,999
• 22,000,001 --> 99,999,999

Murdoch Username (Others)

The Murdoch Authentication & Identification System (MAIS) contains entries for persons who have some association with Murdoch University which requires them to have an entry in the MAIS database, but they are neither staff members of Murdoch University, nor students of Murdoch University. For example, contract staff who are not recorded in the Human Resources System may have an entry in the MAIS database.

These people use a Person Number as their Murdoch Username. This Person Number is allocated when a database entry is created by authorised staff in the Office of Information Technology Services.
