Murdoch Password

Murdoch Password

The Murdoch Password is a sequence of characters held in the MAIS database for use with authentication systems at Murdoch University. This password is most commonly used, in combination with the Murdoch Username, at a login screen for access to the University's computing and network facilities, and for access to restricted information resources, application systems and services provided by, or for, Murdoch University.

Where access restriction has been applied, in most cases, a login screen will display. For example, when a resource that has been restricted via the Murdoch Authentication & Idenfication System (MAIS) is selected, the MAIS Login screen prompts for a Murdoch Username and Murdoch Password.

Murdoch Password Reticulation

When a password is changed, the changed password is reticulated for authentication purposes from the MAIS database to other systems and services, including the University's Microsoft Active Directory. For more information on use of the Murdoch Password for Login for Systems & Services at Murdoch, and for details on Login Synchronisation, refer to information on Login at Murdoch.

NOTE: After a Murdoch Password is changed, there will be a delay of up to 20 minutes before the new password is available for login for some systems and services.

Refer to the relevant section in Login at Murdoch to see:

Murdoch Password (Staff)

A Murdoch Password is allocated to a new staff member. It must be collected from the IT Service Desk counter (Level 2, North Wing, Library, Murdoch Campus). A new staff member needs to attend in person, taking with them:

  1. Appropriate identification (with an identifiable photo), eg. Driver's license
To obtain a University Identification Card, a staff member needs to complete the University Card Staff Member Application Form (Word), have it authorised and then visit the Library to be photographed for the card.
  2. A Murdoch Password Request Form
The new staff member needs to complete the section titled 'Applicant's Details' on the Murdoch Password Request Form (PDF).
Note: Authorisation is not required when the Murdoch Password is collected by the applicant.

After receiving their Murdoch Password, a staff member should refer to the Help Topic Forgotten Your Murdoch Password? to find out how and where to obtain a new password, should they later forget their password.

Murdoch Password (Students)

When accepting their offer of enrolment, new students are able to set their Murdoch Password. Details required to initiate this process are included in the 'Offer Letter' posted to students.

Any new student who does not have a Murdoch Password should contact the IT Service Desk by phone, or by visiting the IT Service Desk counter, Level 2, North Wing, Library, Murdoch Campus.

After setting their Murdoch Password, any new student who has forgotten their password, should refer to the Help Topic Forgotten Your Murdoch Password? to find out how and where to obtain a new password.

When a student uses the Murdoch Password Change (Students) system, or has a new Murdoch Password generated for them by the IT Service Desk, the new password will be available for use with all systems and services though there may be a delay before it is fully synchronised. Students should be aware that not all systems and services they use make use of the Murdoch Password.

Where the Murdoch Password is reticulated, students should expect a delay of 20 minutes between changing their Murdoch Password and being able to use the new password for login to other systems and services.

Murdoch Password (Others)

Persons who are neither staff of Murdoch University, nor students of Murdoch University, but who have some formal association with Murdoch University that requires them to have an entry in the MAIS database, are referred to as MAIS Others.

For example, contract staff, or consultants, who are not recorded in the Human Resources Information System, may require access to the University's computing and network facilities. Any person requiring an entry in the MAIS database as a MAIS Other should refer to Requesting a Murdoch Password.

A Murdoch Password is allocated to an 'other' person when a MAIS database entry is created for them by authorised staff in the Office of IT Services. The Murdoch Password (and a Murdoch Username) should be collected in person from the IT Service Counter (Level 2, North Wing, Library, Murdoch Campus) by the applicant. The applicant needs to take with them:

  1. Appropriate identification (with an identifiable photo), eg. Driver's license
  2. A Request for Murdoch Username and Password Form (PDF) that has been completed by the applicant and authorised by a MAIS Authorised Agent.

A MAIS 'Other' entry in the MAIS database is valid for 12 months unless an earlier expiry date is specified by the MAIS Authorised Agent.

The Murdoch Password will be generated on secure stationery and then handed to the applicant. After receiving their Murdoch Password, an 'other' person should refer to the Help Topic Forgotten Your Murdoch Password? to find out how and where to obtain a new password, should they later forget their password.

For more information, including how to obtain a Murdoch Password if you are unable to be on campus, refer to the Murdoch Password Help (Others).

Forgotten Your Murdoch Password?

Managing Your Murdoch Password

Persons who have been issued a Murdoch Password must keep it confidential and secure and not make it available to any other person. To manage your password, follow these guidelines:

  1. NEVER write your Murdoch Password down.
  2. Do not reveal your Murdoch Password to other people. If other people require access to a University system, they should use their own username and password, or request the system's custodian to provide them with the necessary privileges.
  3. Construct a good password by following the guidelines for selecting a password.
  4. Change your Murdoch Password regularly, at least every six months. Never reuse an old password, or a password that you have used elsewhere.
  5. Change your Murdoch Password immediately if you think it has been compromised.
  6. Keep your passwords unique for different systems. For example, do not make your Murdoch Password the same as the password you use for your online banking. Do not use either of these passwords for your online subscriptions to journals.
