Biomedical Science applies the principles of cellular and molecular biology to the understanding of normal function and disease in humans and other animals.
The Biomedical Science major provides students with an opportunity to focus their training and experience in medical and mammalian biology. The major integrates the major themes of biomedical sciences at the molecular, cellular and whole-body level and addresses community concerns about biomedical research. Knowledge from the fundamental disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and developmental biology is integrated with, and applied to, knowledge in the paraclinical disciplines of pathology, microbiology, parasitology, nutrition, immunobiology and molecular genetics, pharmacology and toxicology. Teaching of these fundamental subjects is carried out on a problem-solving basis dealing with body systems and disease within each discipline.
The major also prepares students for dealing with the impact and ethics of the scientific approach used in biomedical sciences. The material within this major, depending on unit choices, is equivalent to now-standard medical degree pre- and paraclinical training.
