Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Mental Health Nursing

The Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Mental Health Nursing addresses contemporary Australian mental health issues and provides a unique opportunity for advanced postgraduate clinical development for currently Registered Mental Health Nurses.

The course covers the areas of Adult, Child and Adolescent, Community, Psychogeriatric and Rehabilitation Mental Health Nursing as well as selected clinical placements in these areas. Students will be able to specialise in their area of choice.

Students can expect to gain employment in local and national Government or private mental health facilities in their chosen area of specialty.

Qualification:Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Mental Health Nursing (Specialisation) (PgDipAdvMHNurs (Spec)) [The title shall include the title of the specialisation completed; the abbreviated title shall include an abbreviated title of the specialisation.]
Duration:1 year full-time or part-time equivalent

Employment Prospects:Employment opportunities are strong due to the demand for experienced and educated Registered Mental Health Nurses within Western Australia in addition to other states.
Special Requirements:With the exception of the Practice unit, where students will undertake a specified length of supernumerary clinical practicum, the units of this course are to be developed as multi-modal. Internet access will be required. On-campus attendance is required for identified 'Residentials'. Otherwise, the units will be scheduled on the Murdoch and Peel campuses.
Professional Recognition:Graduates may use the course as evidence in applying to the Australian and New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses for accreditation in mental health nursing. Furthermore, graduates who meet other specific practice requirements will meet the College's Standard Six relating to 'Advanced Practice' for the Australian and New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses (May, 1995). Graduates may also wish to pursue consideration for Advanced Practitioner status through individual application to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA). The course may be recognised as additional evidence for that application in the future and will be dependent on NMBWA requirements at the time. A separate application through accreditation to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia will be required.
