student CODE OF conduct

The Code applies to all students of the University in respect of all activities undertaken in their capacity as students, or that otherwise impact upon the University or the University community.

The Code of Conduct sets out standards of conduct and integrity which are consistent with the ethical values and behaviours specified in the University’s Code of Ethics. It is intended to guide students of the University to identify and resolve issues of ethical conduct that may arise in the course of their studies. Adhering to the Code of Conduct will also assist in students development towards the Graduate Attributes.

The Code stands beside but does not exclude or replace the rights and obligations of students of the University under the law. Any alleged breach of the Code which falls within the scope of the disciplinary provisions of any University statutes or other regulations will be treated in accordance with those provisions.

If students are in doubt about any aspect of their conduct or that of others they should normally raise these matters with their academic supervisors in the first instance.

1. Justice

1.1 Students are responsible for making themselves aware of University Statutes and other regulations, including any relevant policy and procedures pertaining to their rights and responsibilities and to abide by these. Students can expect the University to make such Statutes, regulations, policies and procedures readily available to them.

1.2 Student representatives fulfil an important role in the University community. Murdoch University expects that student representatives will continue to act responsibly and in the best interests of all students attending the University.

2. Respect

2.1 Students are expected to behave ethically and respectfully in all dealings with members of the wider community in their capacity as a student of the University.

2.2 Students are expected to act in a way that respects the rights, differences and welfare of all members of the University community, thereby refraining from harassment or discrimination against other students and staff.

2.3  Students have a right to engage in legitimate academic debate on any issue; however, the language used in such debate should accord with the principles of justice and respect.

2.4 Students have a responsibility to participate actively and positively in the learning process. Students should attend classes as required, maintain steady progress within the course and subject framework, comply with workload expectations and submit required work on time.

2.5 Students have a responsibility to act in a way that respects the rights of others and that meets equitable workload expectations when working as part of a group as part of the learning process.

2.6 The University is entitled to expect honest work from students. Cheating, plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of data, and any activities that may unfairly advantage or disadvantage students academically are not acceptable. Students are also expected to be aware of their individual rights and responsibilities regarding the proper use of copyright material.

3.  Responsible Care

3.1 Students represent a key constituency within the University and provide useful perspectives on its operations. Students are encouraged to participate in the functioning of the University and to provide feedback on the teaching-learning environment.

3.2 Students are expected to be familiar with all information relevant to their course or subject and to raise any questions or concerns with the   appropriate academic staff member in a timely manner.

3.3 Students are responsible for monitoring their own academic progress. In order to assist them with this students can expect to have reasonable access to academic staff and to University provided support services.

3.4 University resources and other equipment that are made available for student use must only be used for purposes relevant to academic study.
