Non Standard Teaching Patterns

DEFINITION

“Non-Standard Teaching Patterns” are defined as all teaching modes other than Semester, Trimester and all year units. This policy only applies to units taken for credit.

PRINCIPLES

Evolution of the Undergraduate Course Profile of Murdoch University should be based on the following set of principles:

1.

The academic content and assessment of units taught in non-standard teaching patterns must be at least equivalent to that in units taught in normal teaching patterns.

2.

The non-standard teaching pattern should provide a learning environment that allows sufficient time for student reflection on the material taught and for feedback on progress as well as discussion with the lecturer.

POLICY

1.
Approval of units with non-standard teaching patterns must be according to the procedures and policies stated in the current Academic Planning Guidelines.

2.
The contact hours should be equivalent to those in similar units taught in normal teaching patterns and assessment must comply with the Code of Practice - Assessment.

3.
The length of units taught in non-standard teaching patterns should not be less than 4 weeks from the commencement of the unit until the completion of assessment unless approved by Academic Council or by recommendation of the President of Academic Council. The time must provide a learning environment that allows sufficient time for student reflection on the material taught and for feedback on progress as well as discussion with the lecturer.

4.
Academic support services (Library, computing, learning skills), which may be needed for these units, should be available and sufficient to meet student’s needs.

5. (a)
All students enrolled in units with non-standard teaching patterns must be informed in writing or by e-mail before commencement of the unit of the withdrawal dates, HECS census date and/or deadlines for paying fees (if appropriate) and deadline for deferred assessment application.

  (b)

  (c) This information must be approved by the Enrolments and Fees officer prior to distribution.
