Section 5.6.1 Indexing & Search Tools

The variation in information retrieval behaviour of categories of end-users should be recognised and the organisation of Content and the access to that Content should accommodate this behaviour.

To facilitate ready access to information resources and services, adequate indexing and search tools (eg. Campus Search Engine) and centrally maintained indexes should be provided for end-users.

Staff responsible for administration of MurdochNet shall be responsible for:

(1) providing an appropriate Campus Search Engine that is configured to index selected registered Servers

(2) ensuring that selected Content hosted on designated Servers is appropriately and reliably indexed by the Campus Search Engine robot

(3) providing and maintaining indexes that facilitate the location of information and support navigation of MurdochNet.

Content Providers should be aware that in configuration of the Campus Search Engine the gathering process does not index directories on registered Servers where the directory name begins with the ~ character, or the directory contains a file named norobots.txt (or its equivalent).

Content Providers should be advised to maintain the appropriate META tags within HTML documents (ie. Keywords and Description) that many Search Engines use. This practice should improve the granularity of search results from the Campus Search Engine and other Search Engines that index Murdoch Web sites. The use of additional META tags, (eg. DC.Creator) should facilitate the use of advanced search features.
