Section 5.5 Murdoch Guidelines for Content Preparation

Section 5.5.3 Guidelines for Metadata to Accompany MurdochNet Content

End-users of MurdochNet should be able to locate descriptive information about the Content that they access. This information should be sufficient to enable end-users to make informed decisions about the authoritativeness, currency and relevance of MurdochNet Content. This descriptive information, or metadata, should be readily available and include details of intellectual property rights. The credibility of MurdochNet may be diminished if metadata does not accompany Content. The effective retrieval of MurdochNet Content by search engine users may be reduced when required META tags are not included when Content is prepared.

The use of metadata is a convention to be applied in the preparation of Content. To assist Content Providers, a set of Guidelines for Metadata to Accompany MurdochNet Content shall be provided.

The use of embedded META tags as the method of associating metadata with Content is the recommended method. Content Providers may then display for the end-user the accompanying metadata either as a document information footer, or by including a document information link in a brief footer, that then displays the additional information as a metadata popup.

Use of the Guidelines for Metadata to Accompany MurdochNet Content should ensure consistency in the way that Content Providers:

  • use META tags when preparing MurdochNet Content
  • display metadata that accompanies MurdochNet Content, ie. either as document information footers or as metadata popups.

The Chair of the MurdochNet Management Committee shall be responsible for approving the Guidelines for Metadata to Accompany MurdochNet Content.
