Section 5.5.2 Guidelines for MurdochNet Navigation

End-users of MurdochNet should be able to navigate to the Content they require in an easy-to-use manner. The useability of MurdochNet may be diminished if navigation features are implemented inconsistently.

Given that the University’s Internet presence is made up of numerous individual Web Sites across many Servers, navigation features should use cues in a consistent way across all Web Sites, thereby contributing to the identity and coherence of the overall University presence. Navigation methods should be tested across a range of acceptable Web browsers and alternative methods used to display Content (eg. for menus) be used.

Labels for navigation links should use terminology that is easily recognised and these labels should then be used across all sites, eg. | Murdoch | Home | Index | Search |.

Navigation links such as | Index | and | Search | should be provided on all pages. A | Sitemap | navigation link is recommended for individual Web Sites.

The presentation of navigation links shall comply with the appropriate elements of the Corporate Style Guidelines for MurdochNet, such as the use of colour.

The MurdochNet Management Committee shall assign responsibility for the tasks of:

  • reviewing the current use of navigation features on Murdoch Web sites
  • recommending revisions to the use of navigation features
  • preparing a set of Guidelines for MurdochNet Navigation.

The Chair of the MurdochNet Management Committee shall be responsible for approving the Guidelines for MurdochNet Navigation.
