Section 5 CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Section 5.4 Murdoch Conventions for Content Preparation

Section 5.4.8 Copyright Convention

The Murdoch Copyright Convention to be practiced in the preparation of Content includes:

  • the use of copyright statements with all Content, including Content where the copyright is not owned by the University
  • compliance with copyright requirements for material copied to computers on the Murdoch University Network.

Copyright Statement

The metadata that accompanies Content shall include a copyright statement. The metadata shall be displayed in a manner that enables an end-user to determine the copyright owner for any Content accessed via MurdochNet.

Copyright Notice

The University shall provide an official Copyright & Disclaimer Notice authorised by the Copyright Coordinator. The Copyright & Disclaimer Notice shall include a link to this Policy.

All copyright statements included in the metadata that accompanies University Content shall include a link to the University’s official Copyright & Disclaimer Notice.

META Tags Used to Describe Intellectual Property Rights

The metadata that accompanies Content shall include the use of:

  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Owner’ to identify the University as owner of the intellectual property
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Owner.URL’ to provide a link to the University’s Home Page
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Year’ to record the year (or range of years) of copyright for the Content
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.URL’ to record the location of the University’s Copyright & Disclaimer Notice (ie. http://www.murdoch.edu.au/copy/copy.html)
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Warning’ to indicate that for Content that is copyright material, a warning notice should be displayed before or at the same time as the Content is accessed by an end-user.

In most cases, the University is both publisher and owner of the copyright of Content accessed via MurdochNet. Where there are exceptions (eg. Associated Content, Categories M, N, O and Foreign Content, Categories S, V, W, X), the ownership of copyright should be attributed appropriately to the institution, the organisation recognised as being associated with the University, or the publication (eg. electronic journals), or to the individual.

The metadata that accompanies such Associated Content or Foreign Content shall include the use of:

  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Owner’ to identify the institution, or the organisation that is recognised as being associated with the University, or the publication, or the individual
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Owner.URL’ to provide a link to the Home Page of the insititution, organisation, or publication
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.Year’ to record the year (or range of years) of copyright for the Content
  • The META tag ‘DC.Rights.URL’ to record the location of a Copyright Notice provided by the institution, organisation, or publication.

An individual may be the owner of the copyright. This may be the case with articles in electronic journals, conference proceedings, or research reports. In such case the publisher may be the University, or an organisation associated with the University, or the journal. An individual author may however be required to assign copyright to the publication.

Document Information Footers

The metadata that accompanies Content shall include the use of document information footers or metadata popups accessed by a link on a page titled Page Information. The footer or popup display shall include a copyright statement.

In the case of University Content where the University is the copyright owner, the copyright statement shall:

  • use the copyright symbol followed by the year to which the copyright applies (or range of years)
  • name the University as copyright owner, with the name Murdoch University a link to the University’s Home Page
  • provide a link to the University’s official Copyright & Disclaimer Notice.

For example:

© 2003 Murdoch University | Copyright & Disclaimer |

Where the copyright owner is an institution, an organisation recognised as being associated with the University, or a publication, then the copyright statement in the document information footer should reflect this and provide a link to a Copyright notice maintained by that institution, organisation, or publication.

For example:
