Section 5 CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Section 5.4 Murdoch Conventions for Content Preparation

Section 5.4.5 Responsibility Convention

The Murdoch Responsibility Convention to be practiced in the preparation of Content includes:

  • Determining the person or position with responsibility for modifying Content on a Server
  • Determining the person or position with responsibility for authorising Content to be prepared, produce, modified, or published
  • Determining the person or position with responsibility for authorising the accuracy and currency of information within Content
  • Use of metadata to identify the persons or positions with responsibility for Content

Responsibility Statements

The metadata that accompanies Content shall include one or more responsibility statements. The metadata shall be displayed in a manner that enables an end-user to determine the person or persons to contact should they need to query the currency or accuracy of information within Content. The statements should be constructed in such a way that an email address is also available.

META Tag Used to Identify Responsibility for Content

The metadata that accompanies Content shall include the use of:

  • The META tag ‘DC.Creator’ to identify a person, organisation or service primarily responsible for making the content of the resource
  • The META tag ‘MU.Modified’ to identify the person who last modified the Content
  • The META tag ‘MU.Authorised’ to identify the position that has authorised the publication of the Content, and the name of the person in that position
  • The META tag ‘MU.OrgUnit.Custodian’ to identify the organisation unit responsible for the publication of the Content
  • The META tag ‘MU.OrgUnit.Maintainer’ to identify the organisation unit responsible for maintaining the Content (on behalf of another unit or area).

Document Information Footers

The metadata that accompanies Content shall include the use of document information footers or metadata popups accessed by a link on a page titled Page Information. The footer or popup display shall include one or more responsibility statements, depending on the Content Subcategory.

For Content that is prepared as a document set only the initial page need display the statements of responsibility.

Modification of Content

The statement of responsibility for the modification of Content shall identify the Content Provider as the person responsible for last modifying Content, indicating:

(a) the name

(b) position title

(c) organisation unit or resource area, and use a

(d) link to an email address.

In the case of programs, applications and databases used to generate documents in HTML format, the footer of a generated page should indicate the creator of the program and the person who last modified the program or application. Where appropriate, the person responsible for modifying the data used by that program or application should also be stated.

For example:

Modified by Jo Bloggs, Office of Information Technology Services.

Authorisation of Content

The statement of responsibility for the authorisation of Content shall identify the Content Custodian as the position responsible for authorising the Content, indicating:

(a) the name

(b) position title

(c) organisation unit or resource area, and use a

(d) link to an email address (either a personal or a functional address).

For example:

Authorised by: Jo Bloggs, Director, Office of Information Technology Services.

Due to the ongoing need to contact responsible persons, the association of a functional rather than a personal email address is recommended for a named Content Custodian. In the absence of a Content Custodian, a Web Liaison Officer for an organisation unit or resource area shall be identified as the person responsible for authorising Content.

To determine the required statement of responsibility META tags for Content Subcategories, Content Providers preparing University Content should refer to the Guidelines for Metadata to Accompany MurdochNet Content.
