Section 5 CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Section 5.7 Responsibility for Content

All MurdochNet Content, whether held as:

(1) static files in formats such as HTML, or other formats such as PDF

(2) data files used by Web-based applications

(3) records within databases accessed via Web interfaces

shall have associated with its preparation and maintenance an organisation unit or resource area, and within that unit or area, responsibility may be assigned to an individual Content Custodian or a Web Liaison Officer who shall then ensure that Content Providers prepare and maintain Content. 

The Content Providers who prepare and maintain Content may be employed by the respective organisation unit or resource area, or these tasks may be performed for an organisation unit or resource area by another unit or area, or by external consultants. However responsibility for Content rests with the organisation unit or resource area that ‘owns’ the Content.

The Web Liaison Officer for an organisation unit or resource area, or a Content Custodian shall be responsible for:

Environment

  • liaising with the Web Administrator responsible for the Server used to host Content to ensure that appropriate procedures for the management of Content are implemented, including provision of a ‘development’ environment for the preparation of Content
  • setting up a process for reviewing Content in a ‘development’ area prior to its publication
  •  regularly reviewing Content to ensure that it is identified for review or deletion
  •  maintaining links within Content to ensure they are accurate and current

Tools & Utilities

  •  liaising with the Web Administrator responsible for the Server used to host Content to determine what tools are available for validating tagging, verifying links and reporting on file dates
  •  liaising with the Web Administrator responsible for the Server used to host Content to determine whether utilities are available for separating tasks related to preparation and maintenance of the information component of Content from the layout and appearance component of Content

Standards & Guidelines

  •  ensuring that the preparation of Content is done in document formats that adhere to recommended international standards and follow approved international guidelines as referred to by this document
  •  ensuring the accessibility of Content to end-users with disabilities by compliance with international guidelines referred to by this document
  •  ensuring that the layout and appearance of Content, includes compliance with those elements of the University’s Corporate Style included in the Corporate Style Guidelines for MurdochNet and that compliance is consistent
  •  ensuring that the navigation of Content, includes use of recommended navigation features included in the Guidelines for MurdochNet Navigation and that they are applied in a consistent manner
  •  ensuring that Content is described appropriately, including use of recommended descriptors included in Guidelines for Metadata to Accompany MurdochNet Content

Legislation

  •  ensuring that the provision of Content is in compliance with Copyright requirements
  •  ensuring that the provision of any Foreign Content meets copyright requirements
  •  ensuring the privacy of Content entered or retrieved by end-users, is in compliance with privacy legislation
  •  ensuring that the University’s name and CRICOS Provider Code displays on Content categorised as public relations or marketing information and information to prospective students about courses provided by Murdoch University
  •  ensuring that Content that should be archived is identified and preserved in compliance with University Retention and Disposal Schedules
  •  ensuring Content complies with University legislation and policies
  •  ensuring the accessibility of Content to end-users with disabilities, in compliance disability and discrimination legislation

Conventions

  •  ensuring that in the preparation of Content, compliance with the conventions listed in this document, including accessibility, security, the assigning of access levels to Content, the use of metadata, statements of responsibility, date statements, copyright statements, disclaimer statements, privacy statements and use of the CRICOS Provider Code
  •  ensuring that the authorisation of Content indicates to end-users the authoritativeness of information contained in Content

Information within Content

  •  determining the information needs of end-users
  •  providing relevant information to target audiences of end-users
  •  ensuring the accuracy of information within Content
  •  ensuring the currency of information within Content

Availability & Retrieval

  •  ensuring that Content is available in a timely manner
  •  liaising with staff responsible for administration of MurdochNet to ensure that Content is indexed to facilitate its retrieval

Access & Usage Constraints

  •  applying assigned access levels to Content (eg. world, murdoch, host, mais)
  •  use of appropriate methods to restrict access
  •  assigning authorisation privileges to Content (eg. to individuals, to groups, to categories of end-users)
  •  liaising with the Web Administrator responsible for the Server hosting Content to ensure that a Secure Server (SSL) is used for accessing Content of a personal, sensitive, or confidential nature or involves financial transactions

Network Constraints

  •  determining whether bandwidth requirements of images, graphics, video, etc is not excessive

Alternative Interactive Methods

  •  providing alternate methods for forms submission as appropriate
